Yosemite is not compatible yet, but no worries, you don't need it for developing iOS 8.x apps.Ī few issues came in the way but I guess I can live with that:ġ) The xamarin installation crashed when installing Android components. The installation was easy, and I dedicated only 3GB of memory to the VM. So, I did a clean Windows 7 64bit install on the mac and then installed virtual box and created the VM for osx, looks like its the only option since its a "cracked" like OSX.
It shows you how to install OSX (mavericks) on a regular PC. So I did a little search looking for better options, and I found this tutorial: I had parallels installed but it was slow and frustrating since I have a pretty decent mac:Ĭore i7 with 8GB of RAM and lots of hard drive space. Well I, like you, I wanted a better way to develop natively in Visual Studio because OSX is only needed for compiling and showing the emulator. If anyone has any good advice on this it would be much appreciated.
I did try installing the mac OSX on VirtualBox while in Windows Bootcamp (so I could use Visual Studio natively), but I couldn't get it to work. I am happy for the mac to not run well and give all the juice to the VM because when Im developing on Visual Studio, I only need the mac to build the iOS and run up the IPhone emulator. running in a VM) ?ģ) Are there any settings on the mac that can be used to boost the VM ? I have parallels configured for 4 cores and 4GB RAM which I am guessing is optimal.ġ) Is that the optimal settings for Parallels (could I maybe give the VM 6GB instead of 4 without killing the host ?Ģ) Are there any settings in Visual Studio that optimize it for sub-optimal operating environments (i.e.
I am wondering if I could get Visual Studio to run better. But then I miss the power of VS and find myself switching back again - and it goes on and on - to and fro between VS and XS. I need to be portable, so I do everything on an 8GB i5 MacBook Pro (retina), with Visual Studio running in a Parallels 10 Virtual MachineĪlthough the Visual Studio performance on Parallels is 'acceptable' I keep find myself switching to Xamarin Studio (on the mac) in order to be able to have a nice and 'snappy' IDE experience. I prefer to use Visual Studio (2013) for Xamarin Development.
